Beetle Burner DRT

The Burner

'Burner is a 2 owner from new, 1200 model Beetle, first registered on March 1st 1970. Origionally Blue, the car stayed in the same family for years in Bournemouth, before getting sold to a student in Wiltshire. Here it lived on a farm and was left in a barn for the duration of the owners' studies (about 4 years).
The car has a set of 1970's German made Sprinstar wheels.

Race car catches Fire

At the end of round 1, I packed up and set off home. The Beetle Burner is a fully road legal car and so I was heading off for a 2 hour trip back to Oxford. As I neared the exit to the pit area I noticed smoke from the back right hand side of the car. Then I noticed the Flames. In a flash I turned off the ignition, popped the boot and got the fire extinguisher out. By now the flames were starting to take hold of the right side of the engine bay. I was quick enough to put the fire out thankfully and no-one was hurt.

Later investigation showed that a back fire caused by the ignition timing being too far advanced, set the right hand carburettor stack on fire. The fire was just about taking hold of the engine bay when I caught it and so the damage was minimal.

Many Thanks to the VWDRC members and in particular Russ Weir and his crew.
