Beetle Burner DRT

VWDRC The Volkswagen Drag Racing Club.

Racing a 38 year old car on the 1/4 mile. Isn't that boring?

In the UK, our motorsport exposure generally starts and stops with Formula One racing on a sunday. We have had a few Champions, back in the day, but more often than not you will now hear people say that it is not as good as it used to be. (Mainly because there are not many crashes these days.)

If you are rich enough to have a Sky box, then you might be able to follow the MotoGP.

In America drag racing is massive. So are the Americans, but we will move on. Perhaps its because they built lovely powerful cars in the 50's and 60's that unfortunately can not go round corners, perhaps its because in their large country they have no corners, but either way the Yanks invented racing a car down a 1/4 mile of nice smooth tarmac.

Fastest car wins. Easy. Or is it ....

If you can afford a big engine, you will do well. But then you need a stronger gearbox and transmission. If you have a strong transmission you can then build a bigger engine. Do you see where this is going? It all really comes down to money and how fast you can go is directly proportional to how much cash you have to burn.

The Beetle Burner covers the 1/4 mile in 16 seconds. Thats a standing start to about 80mph.

A Top Fuel dragster will do the same journey in about 6 seconds and might break the timing beam at the other end at 300mph. If you havent seen this form of racing before, I can assure you it is spectacular and amazing how an engine is pushed to its limits to deliver 8000 horsepower.

Why not come and see the Beetle Burner in the 2010 season, alongside the Top Fuel classes and you will see what all the fuss is about.

In the VWDRC there are 2 classes; if your car can run QUICKER than 12.99 seconds down the quarter mile you enter VW Pro. Slower than 12.99 and you run VW Sportsman.
